OPTIMIST-OP Project

The researchers and CIDNUR are pleased to announce the successful conclusion of the OPTIMIST-OP (Optimization of Osteoporosis Screening and Treatment) project, an initiative to establish a scientific protocol for systematic screening and treatment of osteoporosis. Led by ESEL, this project was funded by the European Economic Area Financial Mechanism (EEA Grants) under the Bilateral Relations Fund (FBR_OCR2_75_CIDNUR).

A highlight of the project was the seminar held in November 2024 in Coimbra, which brought together approximately 40 healthcare professionals, including primary care nurses and general practitioners, from various regions of Portugal. The event also featured renowned international speakers, including experts from Portugal, Norway (Sørlandet Hospital, Kristiansand), and Spain (University of Almeria), facilitating a valuable exchange of experiences and promoting training on best practices in osteoporosis screening and treatment.

The seminar presentations are now available on the project website in the form of videos with subtitles in Portuguese and English (click here). The project also resulted in the development of clinical resources, including a clinical manual and five informative patient brochures, all freely available on the project website (here). Another significant milestone was the recent publication of a scientific article documenting the research plan.

The next step involves seeking funding to facilitate the implementation of the developed protocol, ensuring the continuity of this promising work. As part of this effort, a PhD project has already been approved at ESEL/UL, focusing on assessing the feasibility and utility of this screening approach in primary healthcare units in Lisbon.

With the conclusion of the OPTIMIST-OP project, we celebrate a successful step in promoting best practices for bone health and strengthening bilateral relations between Portugal and Norway, paving the way for future collaborations and initiatives.
