Insertion of the study program in the institutional educational offer strategy, in light of the mission of the institution and its educational, scientific and cultural project:
The recent integration of ESEL into the University of Lisbon (Decree-Law No. 83/2024 of October 31) provides mutual benefits in
teaching, research, and community initiatives, following various collaborative efforts between the two institutions in doctoral and
research programs, as well as in pedagogical innovation projects.
The Master's Course in Medical-Surgical Nursing for Individuals in the Perioperative Phase aligns with ESEL's mission, which is
based on being a centre for the creation, development, transmission, and dissemination of nursing culture and science, aiming for
excellence and innovation. The training component is the core of ESEL's activity, and its educational project includes the offering of
courses at all three study levels: bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees, responding to candidates' expectations in pre- and postgraduate education, as well as the need for human resources in the healthcare sector. Significant demand is observed for Master's Courses, reflecting nurses' interest in qualification and specialization, as well as healthcare organizations' interest in attracting more qualified professionals in medical-surgical nursing. ESEL currently offers Master's Courses in Nursing for Individuals in Critical Situations, Palliative Situations, and Chronic Situations, with the perioperative area pending to complete the four medical-surgical nursing specialties defined by the Portuguese Nurses’ Association.
The master's programme responds to demographic and epidemiological trends, given that individuals undergoing surgical
procedures are, in general, of advanced age and have a significant associated multi-morbidity burden (WHO, 2020), which
emphasizes the need for quality, differentiated, and safe perioperative nursing care (Portuondo et al., 2022). This master's
programme integrates into the institution's scientific and cultural project by offering advanced and specialized training, developing
competencies that enable nurses to lead and provide quality care in complex contexts, in accordance with best practices, ethical
standards, and recommendations. This master's programme integrates into the institution's scientific and cultural project by offering advanced and specialized training, developing competencies that enable nurses to lead and provide quality care in complex
contexts, in accordance with best practices, ethical standards, and recommendations. Additionally, there are consortia with
international universities with which ESEL has bilateral agreements under the ERASMUS+ Programme, offering opportunities for
exchange and research.
This Course is aligned with ESEL's strategy, reinforcing its position as a recognised centre of excellence in the field of Nursing,
contributing to regional and national development in the Health sector.
